Fred's Current Activities

At Golden State Colonial, Fred has very little storage space in his room, but his friends did manage to hook up his eMac so he can access the Web and write e-mail and fanzines. He can view DVDs on his eMac. He has almost no space for books, and finds it difficult to read large books, especially hardbacks, holding the book and turning its pages with just his left hand. He prefers that fanzines sent him be stapled in just the upper left corner to make it easier for him to turn the pages.

Fred is currently writing the book review column for the online bimonthly Anthro magazine.

He is also continuing to contribute to APA-L, the weekly fan magazine collated at LASFS, the local SF fan club. He's never missed an issue, not even while he had to dictate his contribution instead of being able to type it. He's also attending LASFS meetings regularly again, with the help of friends who transport him and his wheelchair. His wheelchair is sturdy but easy to take apart and reassemble.

Fred has recovered a tiny amount of movement in his right foot and right hand (though he doesn't yet even have the strength to push a typewriter key; his eMac keyboard is set up to have sticky Shift, Alt, and Control keys)

Fred's mother, Shirley Patten, was born in September, 1912 and lives in Mission Viejo. One of his sisters lives in Huntington Beach; the other has recently moved from New York to North Hollywood to be closer to the rest of the family. He's a lot closer (both geographically and in interests) to his fannish friends than to his family and is very touched by all the help he's getting from his friends to help him continue his social life as a fan of science fiction, manga, and anime.

Fred's new home at Golden State Colonial is near the LASFS Clubhouse, letting Fred not only attend LASFS meetings on Thursday nights, but also attend Cinema Anime on second Saturdays and C/FO on third Saturdays. He has also gone to movie theatres to see recent releases, and attended LosCon 32.
