December 2017

On December 1, Roy Pounds, II comes to Fred's hospital to help Sherry get him into & out of Sherry's minivan. They go to the Pacific Theatre at the Americana at Brand in Glendale to see the 2017 animated film Coco. After, they go to lunch at the Outback Steakhouse. On December 10, Roy Pounds II comes to Fred's hospital to help Sherry get him into & out of Sherry's minivan. They go to the Home Town Buffet in Van Nuys for lunch, for Fred's 77th birthday; then to Sherry's apartment for dessert, where Fred takes a nap. On December 11, Fred gets news of the Furry Book Review program's new Leo Awards. Fred's Furry Fandom Conventions, 1989-2015 is a nominee. On December 12, Kay Shapero updates and puts all of the photographs in the Photo Gallery on Fred's webpage into chronological order; 48 photos spanning 55 years. On December 13, Roz Gibson comes to Fred's hospital to help Sherry get him into & out of Sherry's minivan. They go to SuperCuts in San Fernando to get Fred a haircut, but the waiting line is too long. Then they go to Sherry's apartment for lunch and to watch the 2017 animated feature Despicable Me 3 on her TV. In the afternoon they go to the Center Stage Gallery in Burbank to see the Syd Mead exhibit The Process of Progressions. On December 15, Sherry joins Fred in an Ambiance Medical Transportation ambulette from Fred's hospital to the office of Dr. Mark Lensky in Van Nuys for an appointment. He says Fred is fine.

On December 19, Roz Gibson comes to Fred's hospital to help Sherry get him into & out of Sherry's minivan. They go to the AMC Burbank 16 theater in the Burbank Center to see the 2017 animated film Ferdinand. After, they go to lunch at Barney's Beanery in the Burbank Center. After, they take Fred to SuperCuts in San Fernando for a haircut. On December 23, Fred is diagnosed with pneumonia, and sent to Mission Community Hospital. On December 29, Fred returns from Mission Community Hospital.

November 2017

On November 7, Roz Gibson comes to Fred's hospital to help Sherry get him into & out of Sherry's minivan. They go to Sherry's apartment for lunch and to watch the 1952 feature The Prisoner of Zenda on her TV. Fred loans Roz his copy of Furry Nation by Joe Strike. On November 12, Roy Pounds II comes to Fred's hospital to help Sherry get him into & out of Sherry's minivan. They go to the AMC 16 Burbank Theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 feature Murder on the Orient Express. After, they have lunch at the Outback Steakhouse in Burbank. On November 17, Sherry joins Fred in an ambulette from Fred's hospital to the office of Dr. Mark Lensky in Van Nuys for an appointment; but Dr. Lensky is out sick, so Fred & Sherry return to Fred's hospital. Later, Fred gets the last corrections for Dogs of War II before publication.

On November 22, Roy Pounds, II comes to Fred's hospital to help Sherry get him into & out of Sherry's minivan. They go to Sherry's apartment for lunch and to watch the 1947 feature The Sin of Harold Diddlebock on her TV. On November 24, Fred submits "One Sentient's Trash" to J. F. R. Coates' anthology Furry Trash. On November 25, Roz Gibson comes to Fred's hospital to help Sherry get him into & out of Sherry's minivan. They go to the LAX Marriott for Loscon 44. They have lunch in the hotel's Latitude 33 Restaurant with Michael Burlake, and shop in the Dealers' Room.

October 2017

On October 3, Fred gets a royalty statement from Stone Bridge Press, for $29.45 for e-book sales of his Watching Anime, Reading Manga during the July 2016-June 2017 period. (3,757 copies sold since publication in September 2004.) Also a royalty statement from McFarland for sales of 66 copies of Furry Fandom Conventions during the January-June 2017 half-year, for $125.63 donated to the ALAA. And a royalty statement from Goal Publications for sales of one copy of Symbol of a Nation during the July-September 2017 quarter, for $1.75 also donated to the ALAA. On October 4, Sherry brings Fred to a lunch with Roz Gibson at the Red Lobster in Valencia. After, Sherry and Fred stop for dessert at a Baskin-Robbins in San Fernando. On October 7, Sherry brings Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 1952 film Scaramouche on her TV. On October 10, Sherry takes Fred to an early dinner at her apartment. After, they go to the ASIFA-Hollywood screening of Ron Diamond's 19th annual Animation Show of Shows, at the Disney Animation Studios Theater in Burbank. On October 14, Animation Scoop posts Fred's review of the 19th annual Animation Show of Shows. On October 15, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 Theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 animated film My Little Pony: The Movie. After, they go to lunch at Steak 'n' Shake.

On October 17, Sherry takes Fred to an appointment in Pasadena with dermatologist Dr. Ronald Rigor to examine a persistent scalp sore. After, they go to lunch at P. F, Chang's at Paseo Colorado. On October 22, Sherry brings Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 1950 feature King Solomon's Mines on her TV. On October 25, Fred sends in the edited files for Furry Frolics for publication. On October 29, Roy Pounds, II comes to Fred's hospital to help Sherry get him into & out of Sherry's minivan. They go to the AMC 16 Burbank Theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 feature The Foreigner. After, they have lunch at Fuddrucker's.

September 2017

On September 3, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 1943 featurette John Nesbitt's The Passing Parade: Forgotten Treasure and the 1964 feature The Incredible Mr. Limpet on her TV. On September 8, Sherry takes Fred to the Discovery Cube L.A. in Sylmar to see the audioanimatronic exhibit Dinosaurs Unearthed. After, they go to the LASFS' temporary meeting place to check its suitability for parking, to the San Fernando Library to get a book. and to Sherry's apartment to have lunch. On September 14, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for dinner. Later, they go to the temporary meeting place of the LASFS in Studio city for the annual vote to select the club's Forry Award recipient. Fred donates his two most recent anthologies to the LASFS Library.

On September 19, Sherry takes Fred in the afternoon to SuperCuts in San Fernando for a haircut; then to her apartment to watch the 1951 feature You Never Can Tell on her TV, followed by dinner. On September 21, Sherry takes Fred to an appointment in Reseda with opthamologist Dr. Sanjay Logani. He says that Fred's eyes can still use the same eyeglasses. After, they go to lunch at The Claim Jumper in Northridge. On September 27, Fred receives the International Journal of Comic Art, vol. 19 no. 1, Spring/Summer 2017, with a 24-page illustrated article, "The Multi-Varied, 50-Year Career of a Fan-Researcher of Comic Art, Fred Patten". On September 30, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 theater to see the 2017 film Kingsman: The Golden Circle. After, they go to lunch at Barney's Beanery.

August 2017

On August 1, Sherry takes Fred to Supercuts in San Fernando for a haircut, then to her apartment for lunch, then to the Center Stage Gallery in Burbank to see the Arcanis: A Modern Animal Tarot art exhibition by David Depasquale.  On August 9, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 feature The Dark Tower, but the theater's projector breaks and the movie is cancelled.  Sherry and Fred have lunch early at Barney's Beanery, then go to Sherry's apartment to watch the 2015 feature Kingsman: The Secret Service on her TV.  On August 10, Fred gets the Comic-Con International: San Diego 2017 Souvenir Book!, with his In Memoriam for his friend "Richard Kyle, 1929-2016", on pages 261-262.  On August 14, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment to watch the 2016 feature The Huntsman: Winter's War on her TV.  After, they go to the Outback Steakhouse in Burbank for lunch.  

On August 18, Sherry takes Fred to an appointment with electrocardiologist Dr. Mark Lensky in Van Nuys.  He says that Fred is in fine health but should lose some weight.  After, they go to Sherry's apartment for lunch and to watch the 1962 feature The Music Man on Sherry's TV.  On August 23, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 animated feature The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature.  After, they have lunch at Barney's Beanery.  On August 27, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment to have lunch, and to see the 2017 feature Death Note on her TV.

July 2017

On July 3, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 2010 animated film Welcome to the Space Show on her TV. On July 6, Sherry takes Fred to the mini-mall at Sepulveda & Roscoe in Panorama City to dentist Dr. Yvonne Arafiles to have his teeth cleaned. After, they go to the Yoshinoya Restaurant in the same mall for lunch, then to Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream in San Fernando for dessert. On July 8, Fred receives his 2016 Cóyotl Award trophy for Best Anthology for Gods With Fur. On July 9, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch, to take a photograph of him with his Cóyotl trophy, and to watch the 2017 feature Okja on her TV. On July 13, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 Theater at the Burbank Center to meet Roy Pounds, II and Marc Schirmeister. Together they see the 2017 animated feature Despicable Me 3 . After, they all go to lunch at Barney's Beanery.

On July 16, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 1957 feature Witness for the Prosecution on her TV. On July 19, Sherry and Fred go to the Rivera Library at UCRiverside to meet JJ Jacobson, Zayda Delgado, and Cherry Williams, the new librarians of the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, and to work with Fred's collection. JJ says that many researchers have been asking to see Fred's collection. After Fred's return to his hospital, he finds two people have sent him a link to an article on that day's SyfyWire about "How Furries Became a Fandom" in which he is cited favorably. On July 23, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 1942 feature Rio Rita on her TV. On July 26, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 Theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 feature Valerian and the City of 1,000 Planets. After, they meet Roy Pounds, II and all go to lunch at Flavor of India.

June 2017

On June 1, Sherry takes Fred to the Pacific Theatre at the Americana at Brand in Glendale to see the 2017 feature Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. After, they go to the Outback Steakhouse for lunch. On June 6, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 Theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 film Captain Underpants. After, they have lunch at Barney's Beanery. They stop on the way back to Fred's hospital to get Fred a book at the San Fernando Library and to have dessert at a Baskin-Robbins. On June 11, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch, and to watch the 2016 film A Monster Calls and the 2015 documentary Attenborough's Paradise Birds on her TV. On June 14, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 Theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 film Wonder Woman. After, they have lunch at Barney's Beanery.

On June 16, Fred receives his author's copies of Symbol of a Nation. On June 20, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 1931 feature The Maltese Falcon on her TV. On June 23, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 2017 animated film The LEGO Batman Movie on her TV. On June 26, Sherry and Fred go to pick up Phil Muchnik in Montrose. They go to the UA La Cañada 8 Theatre in La Cañada to see the 2017 animated feature Cars 3. After, they have lunch at North Shore Burgers. On June 29, Sherry takes Fred to the Fuddrucker's at the Burbank Center for dinner. On June 30, Fred is notified that his anthology Gods With Fur has won the 2016 Ursa Major Award in the Best Anthropomorphic Other Literary Work category.

May 2017

On May 3, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch, a nap, and to work on his reviews. On May 10, Sherry takes Fred to an appointment at the office of his dentist, Dr. Yvonne Arafiles in Panorama City, to have one of his teeth extracted by an oral surgeon, Dr. Ginette Zumaeta. For several weeks, Fred's lower left molar had been gradually rotating, and the exposed sharp root of the tooth had been irritating Fred's tongue. On May 13, Sherry takes Fred to the Home Town Buffet in Van Nuys for lunch, then to her apartment to work on his books and his rack of music CDs, most of which he has not listened to since his stroke. On May 16, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 theater at the Burbank Center where the meet Roy Pounds, II and see Guardians of the Galaxy, vol. 2 together. After, they have lunch at P. F. Chang's.

On May 20, Sherry takes Fred for a day at CaliFur the 13th at the Pomona Fairplex, They have lunch with Roz Gibson at the Sheraton Fairplex's McKinley's Grille restaurant. On May 24, Sherry takes Fred to SuperCuts in San Fernando to get his hair cut; then to her apartment for lunch and a nap. On May 28 to 31, Fred proofreads and otherwise readies his anthology Symbol of a Nation from Goal Publications for publication.

April 2017

On April 1, Sherry takes Fred for lunch to the Home Town Buffet in Van Nuys. After, they go to Sherry's apartment to watch Turner Classic's introductions with mystery author Michael Connelly to four detective movies. On April 7, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and a nap. On April 10, Sherry and Fred pick up Phil Muchnik in Montrose and they go to the Pacific Theatre in the Americana at Brand in Glendale to see the 2017 animated feature The Boss Baby. After, they go to lunch at the Outback Restaurant. On April 15, Sherry takes Fred to SuperCuts in San Fernando for a haircut. Then they go to her apartment for lunch, and to watch the 2017 feature Monster Trucks on her TV.

On April 18, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and a nap. On April 21, Sherry takes Fred to an appointment with electrocardiologist Dr. Mark Lensky in Van Nuys. He says that Fred should keep on doing what he is doing. After, they go to Sherry's apartment for lunch and to watch the 2015 animated feature Miss Hokusai on her TV. On April 26, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 2016 animated feature Long Way North on her TV. On April 30, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to work on his books.

March 2017

On March 3, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 1937 feature Way Out West on her TV. Later, he receives his editor's copies of Dogs of War from FurPlanet Productions. On March 9, Sherry takes Fred to the mini-mall at Sepulveda & Roscoe in Panorama City to dentist Dr. Yvonne Arafiles to have his teeth cleaned. After, they go to Hollywood Style and Barber Shop to get Fred's hair cut, then they get a beef bowl takeout at the Yoshinoya Restaurant in the same mall and take it to Sherry's apartment for Fred's lunch. On March 12, Fred's final Funny Animals and More weekly column after five years is posted on the Cartoon Review site, On March 13, Sherry takes Fred to lunch with Roz Gibson and Dwight Dutton at the Claim Jumper restaurant at the Northridge Mall.

On March 16, Fred is notified by the Cóyotl Awards Chair that his Gods with Fur is a nominee for the 2016 Cóyotl Award in the Best Anthology category. On March 17, Sherry brings Fred to her apartment where he conducts a Skype interview with Ivic Wulfe for a South Afrifur "pawdcast". After, he has lunch there. On March 20, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 Theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 feature Kong: Skull Island. After, they have lunch at Barney's Beanery there. On March 23, Sherry takes Fred to an appointment in Reseda with opthamologist Dr. Sanjay Logani. He says that Fred's eyes have deteriorated slightly but not enough to require new glasses. After, they go to lunch at The Claim Jumper in Northridge. On March 28, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC Burbank 16 Theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2017 feature Beauty and the Beast. After, they have lunch at Barney's Beanery.

February 2017

On February 4, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to work on his books. They watch the 2016 Hong Kong-Chinese animated feature The Monkey King 2: Monkey is Back on her TV. On February 11, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch. On February 16, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch. After, they watch the 1954 feature Rear Window on her TV. On February 22, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for a snack and a nap. After, they go to the Outback Steakhouse in the Empire Mall in Burbank for lunch. On February 25, Sherry takes Fred to the AMC 16 Theater at the Burbank Center to see the 2016 animated feature Rock Dog. After, they go to lunch at Fuddruckers.

January 2017

On January 1, Sherry takes Fred to lunch at the Home Town Buffet in Van Nuys.  After, they go to the Pacific Theatre at the Americana at Brand in Glendale to see the 2016 animated feature Sing.  On January 10, Sherry takes Fred to the UCRiverside Library to meet UCR's Eric Milenkewicz and J. J. Jacobson, and the Library's new Director of Distinctive Collections, Cherry Williams; and to do research.  On January 15, Sherry takes Fred to lunch at the Home Town Buffet in Van Nuys, then to her apartment for dessert and to watch the 2016 feature Now You See Me 2, then to SuperCuts in San Fernando for a haircut.

On January 18, Sherry takes Fred's laptop computer, which is malfunctioning, to an Apple store for repairs.  On January 21, Sherry takes Fred to her apartment for lunch and to watch the 1934 film Cockeyed Cavaliers.  On January 24, Sherry gets Fred's repaired computer back.  On January 28, Sherry takes Fred to Animé L.A. 2017, late because of a dead car battery.  Fred participates in the panel "The Cartoon/Fantasy Organization: 40 years of the first anime fan club in North America!"  On January 30, Sherry takes Fred to an appointment with electrocardiologist Dr. Mark Lensky in Van Nuys.  He says that Fred is retaining too much liquid and should cut back on drinking liquids.  After, they go to Sherry's apartment for lunch.
